International Journalism Certification Requirements

The Certificate in International Journalism at Hamline University is a very competitive program.  Applications are received from all parts of the world. To maintain CIJ’s high academic standards, applicants must meet the following criteria.

General Requirements for all applicants (HU undergraduates, postbaccalaureate students, international admission students and exchange students):

  • All students entering the CIJ program must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 (or equivalent) in order for their application to be considered.
  • All applicants must submit a letter of recommendation addressing the applicant’s academic performance, maturity and ability to work and study in a multicultural environment.
  • All applicants must submit a personal statement of one to two pages explaining their qualifications and interest in the program.
  • HU applicants should apply either in the spring semester of their first year or the fall semester of their sophomore year.  Other applicants may be considered on a case-by-case basis by the CIJ faculty.
  • Post-baccalaureate students should apply to enter the program in the spring semester.  They also should have some prior background in media studies or journalism.
  • International students who are not native speakers of English are required to have a score of at least 570 on the TOEFL paper exam, 230 on the computer-based TOEFL exam, or 88-89 on the Internet-based TOEFL exam.

Application Deadlines

  • Applications by HU students are due on the first Tuesday of November (Fall semester) or
    the first Tuesday of April (Spring semester).  HU undergraduates may download application materials here.
  • International, exchange and post-baccalaureate applicants must follow other admission guidelines set by the College of Liberal Arts Office of Admission and the Office of Off-Campus Programs.  Check these two websites for more details:
