Statement of Purpose
The purpose of the new Center for Teaching and Learning is to promote engagement and effective teaching that cultivates significant student learning. The CTL fosters a campus culture that values diversity of learning, teaching, and delivery as well as supports faculty in the scholarship and practice of teaching and learning through grant opportunities and ongoing faculty development.
To achieve this mission, the CTL works:
- To enhance the quality of student learning via faculty development.
- To offer physical and virtual spaces for faculty collaboration on teaching and learning.
- To support and enhance the quality and quantity of scholarship.
- To develop cross-university teaching circles and dialogues to examine best practices, including the emerging scholarship on teaching and learning collaborations.
- To encourage collegiality through mentoring, one-on-one counseling, and instructional workshops.
- To consolidate research support for grant writing.
- To provide comprehensive faculty development that addresses faculty needs from new faculty orientation through early-career, mi-career and late-career support.
- To build on and facilitate existing faculty development initiatives in learning outcomes assessment, diversity integration, and the uses of academic technology in teaching and learning.
- To enable faculty to adopt new pedagogical strategies for face-to-face and online teaching.
- To foster faculty culture dedicated to ongoing scholarship and creative activity.
- To administer internal grant programs focused on faculty development.
- To enhance faculty engagement in writing and securing externally funded grants.
