ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) students seeking an initial teaching license from Hamline University must possess a baccalaureate degree (B.A. or B.S.) from a regionally accredited college or university with a minimum overall G.P.A. of 2.50. An official transcript of previous coursework, two letters of recommendation, an essay, and other application materials will be reviewed to determine admission status. **You do not need to supply transcripts for courses taken at Hamline. An assessment (see below) is completed by an advisor prior to registration for coursework.

To qualify for student teaching, which is the final phase of the licensure sequence, students must earn an overall G.P.A. of 3.0 in their education and content/specialty coursework and gain final departmental approval. The MAT program requires a grade of B- or above for all coursework.

Applications are reviewed on an on-going basis.

ASSESSMENT OF PRIOR COURSEWORK

Minnesota Board of Teaching licensure rules require that colleges and universities assess the previous coursework and experiences of postgraduate students who seek recommendation for licensure.

Such assessment ensures that all candidates for licensure have met the requirements of the approved university program. The education requirements may be met through completion of graduate coursework offered by Hamline, in combination with up to 8 semester credits of other equivalent coursework. The content or specialty requirements may be met through completion of undergraduate coursework offered by Hamline in combination with equivalent coursework completed at other accredited institutions.

Official assessment will occur after students are admitted to the School of Education. The MAT faculty evaluate transcript(s), course descriptions, and other documentation to determine course equivalencies and plan a tentative schedule of courses.
