 Mission Statement

Our mission is to prepare outstanding teachers of English as a Second Language (ESL), English as a Foreign Language (EFL) and Bilingual Education.

We develop the capacity of these teachers to meet the requirements of educating people who are learning English as an additional language.

ATLAS Program               Professional development and resources for teachers who work with adults

We also provide continuing professional development to mainstream teachers on topics related to educating non-native speakers of English. Through reflection and action we seek to model a balance between professional and personal growth.

Graduates of our programs:

  • Support and enhance their students' acquisition of excellent social and academic English
  • Help their students maintain and expand their first language 
  • Use their understanding of linguistic principles to inform their instruction 
  • Integrate the teaching of language and content 
  • Understand the effects of culture on language learning 
  • Collaborate with other professionals to support non-native speakers of English
  • Reflect on their own learning and teaching to further personal and professional growth 
  • Advocate for language minority students and promote social justice

 

Facilities & Accommodations

The Center makes teacher education in English as a second language (ESL) relevant and convenient. Coursework is taught by active professionals with a keen understanding of the specialized field. All classes are held in the evenings, weekends, or online. Courses are taught year round. Summer students who are unable to commute to the campus may be able to be housed in a campus residence hall.

We are pleased to offer Master degree programs, Minnesota state licensure programs in K-12 ESL and Bilingual/Bicultural Education, and TEFL, Adult ESL and Mainstream teacher certificate programs. Please use the links below to explore the opportunities available in each of these areas.
