Drew Jones is entering his second year as the throws coach with the men's and women's track and field programs.

In April, 2009, Jones became a full-time assistant coach with the Hamline men's and women's track & field programs after serving as an interim throws coach throughout the year.

Jones works with both the men’s and women’s teams with an emphasis on throws. He also serves as a recruiter of new student-athletes and teaches in the physical education department.

A four-year letterman with the Piper track and field team, Jones earned All-MIAC accolades after he finished third in the shot put at the outdoor conference championships with a toss of 48-6 in 2006. He also finished sixth in the hammer throw with a throw of 149-2 to earn All-MIAC honorable mention in the event that year. In his senior season, 2007, Jones again earned All-MIAC honors in the weight throw, finishing third with a toss of 54-7 ΒΌ. Additionally, Jones was an NCAA provisional qualifier in the 35-pound weight throw and outdoor shot put.

In 2009, Jones coached Piper throwers to great accomplishment. In the only two throwing events of the indoor season, three Hamline athletes hit NCAA provisional marks. Derall King’s mark in the shot put landed him at the indoor nationals where he posted an All-American fifth place finish.

Jones also coached the 2009 indoor MIAC weight throw champion Aaron Wilkerson and second place finisher Andy Norman. The Pipers took five out of the top six places in that event. He also coached two student-athletes in the top six in the shot put.

With the women’s team this season, Emily Amici took third place in the shot put en route to an All-MIAC third place finish in the indoor pentathlon. Also at the MIAC indoor championships he upped the number of finals qualifiers from one in 2008 to three individual women in 2009.

When the team moved to the outdoor season, Jones' throwers took three of the top six places in both the discus and hammer throws, and hit two NCAA provisional marks in the hammer throw (Wilkerson and Norman), at the MIAC outdoor championships. Norman was also all-MIAC in the discus while six athletes put in all-MIAC honorable mention performances. King finished second in the shot put and again qualified for nationals.

With the women's team outdoors, Robyn Wernberg also had an All-MIAC honorable mention performance by finishing fifth in the hammer throw.

Jones is a Level 2 certified USATF throws coach. He graduated in 2007 from Hamline with a bachelor's degree in psychology. Jones and his wife, Amanda '07 - also a former Piper thrower, live in Saint Bonifacius, Minnesota.
