Being a Savior Saves Nobody: Disrupting the White Savior Complex

Thursday, April 6, 2023 - 111 Anderson Center, 11:15 a.m. - 12:45 p.m.

This workshop addresses the harmful inequities of folks adopting the White Savior Complex. While many well-intentioned folks work to serve the community, oftentimes, they adopt characteristics of white supremacy while working with disenfranchised communities of color based on ignorance, lack of self-awareness and lack of community input. In doing so, this leads to a continuance of distrust and disengagement for community members in our society.   This workshop will teach you how to defy the White Savior Complex in practice by learning mindfulness, action planning and inclusive leadership practices. You will advance your leadership skills by learning practices to influence personal, professional, team and organizational change. Our presenter will be Brittany Clausen (MSW), the Founder & Visionary Strategist of Envision Greatness, whose work centers on helping purpose-driven leaders become mindful and inclusive leaders to dismantle oppressive systems.
