Inspire your teaching. Hamline’s Master of Arts in Education program began over 20 years ago, expanding on our historic reputation for educational leadership. In Hamline’s program, you'll explore pathways to improving educational systems around the world while empowering yourself as a teacher and a leader.

With Hamline’s MA in Education, you will:

  • Join a community of professionals interested in a rigorous exploration of educational systems and the societal factors affecting their practice—and invested in advocacy to improve those systems in the world

Start dates and application deadlines

We review applications on a rolling basis, meaning that you can apply and start your Master of Arts in Education online at three separate times throughout the year. We recommend applying at least six weeks before the term you want to start to ensure your spot.

MAEd degree program format

Hamline's master's in education is offered entirely online. Some individual classes may meet synchronously at a set meeting time online in the evenings. You have the option of choosing elective coursework that is offered fully online, on-campus, or hybrid.

Time to complete your online master’s in education

You decide your pace, so—if you want—you can graduate as early as 24 months or take as many or as few classes as your schedule allows.

If you transfer credits for your electives from an already completed Hamline graduate education certificate, you can complete the MAEd in 18 months.

Master of Arts in Education courses

You’ll finish your master’s in education online in 10-12 courses.

Core courses (20 credits):

The core of the MAEd degree is made up of seven courses:

  • GED 8021: Designing Effective Learning Environments (2 credits)
  • GED 8022: Action Research: Practice and Application (2 credits)
  • GED 8024: Educating for Equity and Social Justice (4 credits)
  • GED 8200: Understanding Learning (2 credits)
  • GED 8210: Investigating Contemporary and Critical Issues in Education (2 credits)
  • GED 8220: Policy, Leadership, and Advocacy in Education (4 credits)
  • GED 8400: Research Design (4 credits)
     

Elective courses (10 credits):

Complete credits in one of Hamline’s certificate programs to further your expertise and add an additional credential to your resume.

    No, if you are looking to get your initial teaching license as part of your master’s degree, please apply for our master's in teaching with licensure.

  • Do I need to have a teaching license to enroll in the master’s in education program?

    No, but only if you are interested in getting a master’s degree to use for career advancement outside of positions that require a teaching license.
