Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy for Social Justice

Description

This interactive workshop explores Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy (CSP) as a tool for fostering belonging, engagement, and success for BIPOC and other minoritzed students. Dr. Kareem Watts will share insights from his arts-based research on how Black and African American professors use hip hop pedagogy (HHP) to enhance student learning and challenge traditional education norms. Join us to gain practical strategies for creating inclusive, culturally sustaining classrooms that advance equity and social justice.

Dr. Kareem Watts is the Director of the Hedgeman Center for Student Diversity Initiatives and Programs at Hamline University, an award-winning educator, hip hop artist, and poet with over 16 years in higher education. He recently received the “Outstanding Dissertation Award,” from the National Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education (NADOHE) for his arts-based research. In 2024, Kareem presented at his first international conference, the 7th Annual European Hip Hop Studies Network in Ireland. His latest album, Flo-etic Storytelling Mixtape Ch. 5, is featured in the final chapter of his dissertation.
