Psychology Department Professor Serena King and co-author Jeremie Richard (Counselling Psychology, McGill University International Centre for Youth Gambling Problems and High-Risk Behaviors) authored a major peer reviewed paper recently accepted for publication in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry (a journal of the Association for Child and Adolescent Mental Health). It is to be published in the annual review issue in January 2023, in the top 2.9% of journals in the field).
The paper is entitled "The Emergence of Problem Gambling from Childhood to Emerging Adulthood: A Systematic Review" and will be released to the annual research review issue in January 2023. The paper uses PRISMA scientific review criteria for over 1,800 articles. The results suggest increased involvement in activities with gambling-like features and novel forms of gambling (i.e., video gaming, skins wagering, social casino games, loot boxes, online gambling, sports betting and other emerging online modalities) is associated with a greater risk for problem gambling in youth. This is the first time this research question was examined in the literature. Policy and prevention implications are discussed.
Maggie Gavic, Hannah Moore, Alice Kellner (Hamline students, now alumni) from Professor King's clinical psychology and addiction research lab were involved in the work.
