HSEL professors Basford and Lewis recently presented at an American Educational Research Association event in Chicago. They shared the culmination of three research studies conducted over the course of five years, presenting what they have learned about the school-to-prison pipeline from these studies, including their theory of how schools must adapt if they genuinely seek to end it.
In another presentation, co-presented with former HSEL graduate student Colin Perucco, they highlighted the transformative learning experience of a teacher (Colin) who courageously fought to advocate for his students and protect his job. Findings show the experience ultimately served as a form of empowerment and self-efficacy for the teacher, but underscore a need for greater vigilance in preparing future and practicing teachers to engage in, rather than shy away from, the culture wars happening in schools today.
