Ryan Larson, assistant professor in the criminology and forensic science department, is an author on a new data visualization research article entitled "Income Extraction via the Criminal Legal System: A Community-Level Perspective" in Socius. Dr. Larson and his coauthors use administrative court data in the Minneapolis/St. Paul and Seattle/Tacoma metropolitan statistical areas to operationalize income extraction via court-ordered monetary sanctions and visualize its spatial distribution across Census Tracts. They demonstrate that disadvantaged communities pay a higher share of their income in fines and fees compared with more advantaged neighborhoods, perpetuating social control and poverty at the neighborhood level.
