Stacie Bosley, Kahlert Professor of Economics, recently published an article in Truth in Advertising (TINA.org). The article -- entitled "So You Say Your MLM Offers 'Supplemental Income' What Does That Mean?" -- addresses consumer protection issues in the context of multi-level marketing recruitment and promotion, using evidence generated through research conducted with Hamline colleagues and students. Bosley finds that, if most actual participants in an MLM make no money or lose money, representations that include phrases like "supplemental income" convey atypical results and, therefore, such representations could generate consumer harm.
