Hamline University was proudly represented at the recent Upper Midwest Association for Campus Sustainability (UMACS) conference at Macalester College by Drs. Irina Makarevitch, Linnette Werner, Patty Born, and Valentine Cadieux, Center for Justice and Law Fellow and alum Mariah Cohen, and Hamline students Cece Chmelik, Gabriel Fleischhacker, and Forestasia Aune. They shared their insights and experiences in exploring and advancing sustainability on campus. Drs. Makarevitch and Werner presented on integrating sustainability into the curriculum and establishing a culture of sustainability, discussing challenges and successes in creating interdisciplinary, project-based learning opportunities that have both local and global impact. Cece, Gabe, Mariah, and Valentine, participated in a panel and workshop on best practices in sustainability communications, where they shared innovative strategies for helping our community connect across the many activities involved in sustainability and climate action.
In another session celebrating the completion of the new book Gleanings from the Field: Food Security, Resilience, and Experiential Learning, Dr. Cadieux explored with other members of the Cross Campus Food Access Coalition their chapters on the role of experiential learning in teaching about food security and resilience, highlighting hands-on approaches that deepen students' connections to sustainability, community collaboration, land, and mess.
