September marked the start of Hamline University’s monthly Community Conversation series, which focuses on themes affecting our community with the goal of exploring, engaging, and learning together.
The opening event in this series was led by Ken Fox, Professor of Conflict Studies in Hamline’s School of Business, on Sept. 17 concerning the topic of "Engaging Constructively Across Deep Divides."
“Professor Fox's presentation was a great learning experience and engagement opportunity,” said David Everett, Hamline Vice President of Inclusive Excellence. “His foundational content – which touched on recognizing realities and different truths, identifying divergence around truths and collision of worldviews, and highlighted the use of discomfort as a weapon – was superbly done. Professor Fox extraordinarily set the table for how we should pursue and engage in challenging conversations, regardless of topic.”
As Hamline and the broader community approach a number of polarizing events this fall, this discussion provided a backdrop for how we can connect and communicate in the presence of differences. During the discussion, the topic of biases and their role were highlighted and how, if left unchecked, they might quietly shape our society and our interactions.
Hamline Community Conversations are interactive experiences that provide the opportunity to ask questions, discuss perspectives and share experiences. Stay tuned to the Hamline Newsroom for information on upcoming events in this series.
