Hamline University professor Serena King will co-host the 2024 Cannabis Summit with Hazelden Betty Ford Graduate School and Smart Approaches to Marijuana Minnesota at Hazelden Betty Ford Treatment Center in St. Paul on Friday, Oct. 25 at 9 a.m.
Dr. King, who is a professor of psychology and a clinical psychologist, organized, co-developed and planned the event. She will also deliver opening remarks and moderate a panel discussion alongside Dr. Kevin Doyle, CEO and President of Hazelden Betty Ford Graduate School.
The purpose of the summit is to meet the growing need for accurate and practical knowledge about cannabis use as its legalization and regulation continues to evolve in Minnesota. This work comes in the context of an evolving landscape of legislation, policy, legalization and research. The event will feature a panel discussion with community representatives, preceded by expert discussions on three key aspects of cannabis legalization:
- A Public Health Approach to Cannabis Research in Minnesota
- Opportunities to Shape Cannabis Policy at the Local and State Levels (Local Point of Sale Policies and Rulemaking)
- The Interplay of Youth, Cannabis and Health
- A moderated panel discussion with community stakeholders, including law enforcement, those who provide family education on mental health, lived experience experts and treatment provider perspectives.
Organizers of the Cannabis Summit welcome undergraduate students, faculty and staff who have a role in health-related education, as well as representatives from various community groups, with the hope that this event will spur significant interaction, discussion and knowledge-sharing.
