Advanced Practicum Program
Counseling & Health Services
The Counseling & Health Services (C&HS) office is an integrated medical and mental health clinic guided by an ethic of holistic wellness for clients and staff alike. By modeling a collegial work environment with a healthy work/life balance, we seek to provide an appealing example of post-graduate professional life in psychology.
Our advanced practicum program is designed to provide varied learning opportunities and individualized supervision to meet each student's developmental needs, and thus prepare trainees for pre-doctoral internships in college counseling and other multidisciplinary team settings. Advanced practicum students receive supervised training in the delivery of individual counseling and crisis intervention with a culturally- and socioeconomically-diverse population of college student clients. (Opportunities for group co-facilitation and outreach programming are also potentially available.)
C&HS strongly values the contributions made by our advanced practicum students, and we maintain a dedicated office space exclusively for use by trainees. Having worked together as a team since 2011, our staff psychologists have extensive experience in providing supervision. On a weekly basis, we offer one hour of weekly individual supervision by a licensed psychologist, and one hour of group case consultation with the entire counseling team. Over the course of the academic year, our trainees work with two different individual supervisors in order to gain exposure to varied styles and theoretical approaches to counseling.
Qualifications
Qualified candidates for the advanced practicum at Hamline University C&HS must be currently enrolled in an APA-accredited doctoral program in counseling or clinical psychology, have completed at least one prior therapy practicum, and have demonstrated a strong interest in working with a college student population.
