Student Organization Advisors

Student Activities and Leadership Development

Advisor role

The role of the advisor can look very different in each organization based on its structure and needs. The most important note, however, is that the advisor is there to advise and support—not to lead or administer.

General advisor expectations include maintaining regular communication with the officers of their organizations; being aware of the organization’s mission, goals, and activities; understanding institutional policies and guidelines, and helping the organization to interpret these as needed; and supporting day-to-day activities.

Organizations are encouraged to meet with their advisor each time leadership changes occur in order to discuss needs and expectations of the organization/advisor relationship.
