Money and loans are stressful, but the financial aid office walked me through the financial aid steps and highlighted the most important parts of what it would look like down the line. After sitting down with them, I was totally confident that I could afford this.

Birthplace of Intercollegiate Basketball

Hamline's basketball history

Did you know Hamline is the birthplace of intercollegiate basketball? Hamline hosted the world’s first intercollegiate basketball game against the University of Minnesota’s School of Agriculture on February 9, 1895, in the basement of the Hall of Science (where the Blue Garden is today). The final score, using the game’s original rules, was 9–3.

While other schools claim the title of “first basketball game,” Hamline hosted the first game between two colleges.

Hamline University's Mission and History

Bringing opportunity and equity to all since 1854

Old Main with purple flowers

Mission statement

At Hamline University, our mission is to create a diverse and collaborative community of learners dedicated to the development of students' knowledge, values, and skills for successful lives of leadership, scholarship, and service.

Statement of purpose and belief

A history of firsts and a commitment to educate all

At Hamline University, we believe that everyone should have access to a quality education and that education is the most important vehicle to transform lives and communities. We bring together a community of learners who excel academically, are intellectually curious, and demonstrate determination, spirit, and drive. We were the first university in Minnesota and the first to award bachelor’s and master’s degrees to women and men. Today, we remain true to our beginnings, with nearly half of our students the first in their families to attend a four-year college.

A career-ready education

We provide students with an exceptional educational experience, rooted in the liberal arts, which prepares them for their careers and a lifetime of growing both in their fields and in fields they may not yet envision. Through our student-centered approach, students learn the essential skills that empower them to both excel in rapidly changing professions and contribute meaningfully to society. A Hamline education is a career-ready education that opens doors to wide-ranging opportunities for students to continue to build successful lives.

Building a better society through education

We believe in John Wesley’s motto of “doing all the good we can, in all the ways we can.” We are champions for justice and social change. We fuel our students’ desire to contribute to—and transform—society. We demonstrate that academic excellence goes hand in hand with improving the lives of others. We strive to ensure that our students graduate prepared to flourish in their communities ready to practice inclusivity and uphold equity. A Hamline education gives students the tools to change the world.

Hamline University: Known for firsts

Before there was a state of Minnesota, there was a university. Hamline University was founded in 1854 in what was then still the Territory of Minnesota, as the state’s first university and one of the first coeducational colleges in the United States. Hamline’s history of first continues to this day:

  • 1856: Hamline offers Minnesota’s first legal education curriculum.
  • 1859: Hamline confers Minnesota’s first bachelor’s degrees—to women, Elizabeth and Emily Sorin.
  • 1863: Hamline confers Minnesota’s first master’s degrees—to women.
  • 1883: Minnesota’s first medical school established at Hamline.
  • 1895: Hamline hosts the first-ever intercollegiate basketball game.
  • 1922: Hamline confers its first bachelor’s degree to an African American — Anna Hedgeman.
  • 1924: The nation’s first exchange program established with Peking (Beijing) University.
  • 1946: Fall registration passes 1,000 students for the first time, mainly due to veterans entering or beginning college after World War II.
  • 1969: Black students start PRIDE (Promoting Racial Identity, Dignity, and Equality), Hamline’s first organization for and by students of color. The organization is now known as the Black Student Collective.
  • 1984: Hamline implements the nation’s first computer literacy requirement for undergraduates.
  • 1994: Hamline offers Minnesota’s first advanced writing degree.
  • 1995: Hamline offers the Midwest’s first doctorate of public administration.
  • 2015: Dr. Fayneese Miller becomes Hamline’s first Black president. She is the second woman to hold the position.
  • 2017: Minnesota’s first Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation Center established at Hamline.
  • 2022: Hamline offers Minnesota's first bachelor's degrees in forensic science.
  • 2023: Hamline offers Minnesota's first Nature-Based Early Learning Certificate.

University Leadership

Old Main on Hamline Campus during golden hour

President and leadership

Since its founding in 1854, Hamline University's leaders have empowered students to make the world better for everyone. It is with this continued vision and resolve that Hamline's leaders continue to shape Hamline to be an institution of regional and national consequence.

Office of Inclusive Excellence

Office of Inclusive Excellence logo

Making Hamline a place for all

The Office of Inclusive Excellence, working under the Office of the President, provides institutional leadership on all matters of access, belonging, and community. At Hamline University, inclusive excellence is an integral part of our identity, and we believe our success depends on our efforts to recognize, value, and promote experience and perspective as a fundamental community learning practice. To that end:

  • We are committed to recruiting and retaining a reflective administration, faculty, staff, and student body
  • We strive to ensure that our students are prepared to engage and succeed in increasingly changing environments
  • We are committed to the pursuit of excellence by not focusing on regard to race, color, religion, creed, sex, sexual orientation, gender expression, gender identity, national origin, marital status, familial status, disability, age, or protected veteran status in any activity administered by the university
  • We endeavor to make Hamline University a place recognized for its positive climate—one where all stakeholders know that their contributions to the mission of the university are essential to our success

Hamline University's Statement of Civility

Hamline University is dedicated to intellectual inquiry in its full depth, breadth, and abundance. It is committed to academic freedom and celebrates free expression for everyone. The University embraces the examination of all ideas, some of which will potentially be unpopular and unsettling, as an integral and robust component of intellectual inquiry. It is expected that the expression of ideas will be done in ways that are respectful of others and that do not include personal vilification based on race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, sexual identity, appearance, disability, or political affiliation. Hamline University encourages all, whether it be on campus or off, to foster a respectful, and welcoming community defined by a concern for the common good, by developing relationships and through a culture that promotes the rights, safety, dignity, and value of every individual. A university community embracing these common values, consisting of students, faculty, staff, the Board of Trustees, and external constituents, is vital to the pursuit of excellence in research, scholarship, and creative activity.

Strategic goals

Training, learning, and development

Members of the Hamline community will demonstrate a willingness to engage and equip individuals to lead change on campus and in a changing world.

Metrics and evaluation

Hamline will develop and practice protocols that will create expectations throughout the institution, maintain specific standards of practice, and promote a culture of engagement.

Campus climate, culture, and community

Hamline will develop a campus climate and culture where all community members feel welcome and supported, and experience a sense of belonging. This overall well-being will be tangible through authentic, respectful, and engaged relationships.

Hamline University's Land Acknowledgment

Hamline University acknowledges that the land on which we gather and refer to as Minnesota is the traditional and unceded territory of the Dakota and Ojibwe. Minnesota comes from the Dakota name for this region Mni Sota Makoce, “the land where the waters reflect the skies.” We pay respect to the citizens of not only those tribes, but others as well, both past and present, and their continuing relationship to their ancestral lands. Making this recognition expresses gratitude and appreciation to those whose territory we reside on and honors the Indigenous people who have been existing with, and on, the land from time immemorial. This long-standing history is significant as land acknowledgments do not exist in past tense or historical context—or without relevant real-time realities. We need to build mindfulness regarding the source of our present land privilege, understand the long-standing history from which it comes, and seek to reconcile our place within both.

Hamline, as an institution and community, will hold itself accountable as an Indigenous partner by working stridently to amplify, address, and counter the historical and contemporary injustices that continue to impact Indigenous people.
